SGMAG.COM MIND CANDY
Skye Sweetnam
July 15, 2003
by Christina Scannapiego

At the age of 14, Canadian Skye Sweetnam has already written and recorded an album that contains the hit leadoff single from the movie How to Deal, starring Mandy Moore and Trent Ford. "Billy S.," a high-energy, guitar-driven pop song, takes on the "I just don't wanna go to school today" mood that we are all much too familiar with. Skye has not only co-written and co-produced her own record, but the multi-talented ninth grader also loves to snowboard, draw, and create videos. She's actually made a music video using stop animation, which she edits on her computer at home. The busy artist recently took a few minutes out of her hectic L.A. visit to chat with SG.

SG: How did you first get discovered for your music?
SS: It's a funny story, actually. I made a demo with a couple in my town who heard me sing. My grandmother was getting her hair done one day, and she knocked on the window when I was walking by the salon. She had me sing and dance for everybody in the salon, and they loved it. Her hairdresser's brother is an entertainment lawyer, so I passed the demo on to her, and he passed it on from there. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time--it was just a combination of talent and chance.

You obviously have a lot of different talents. Do you play any instruments?
I co wrote my whole album with James Robertson. He played on the album, but he teaches me how to play everything. It's so cool, having somebody to do that with. I'm really into bass right now; that's my favorite.

Did you expect your music career to take off so quickly?
No, it's crazy. It's gone so fast--I never expected that I'd be doing this much in such a short time. It was cool--Capital had another artist to cover a Cat Stevens song, but they heard "Billy S." and liked it better.

Have you read any Shakespeare yet?
Yeah, I have, actually. A Midsummer Night's Dream was my favorite. But it was funny that the title [of the song] turned into "Billy S.," because the producer didn't know how to spell "Shakespeare" and "Billy S." was easier for him.

Do you miss any school because of your success?
Yeah, I missed the first half of ninth grade and had to get tutored in my spare time. I miss going to school--it's kind of weird to get one-on-one tutoring rather than being in a classroom with other students.

Have you been performing a lot?
Yeah, I did the Craig Kilborn show, and I'll be doing more shows and performances around Toronto, as well as L.A.
